Lathyrus is a chamber jazz music quartet
based in Essen, Germany.

(DE/cello)

(LV/voice,composition)

(DE/trumpet,flugelhorn)

(DE/piano)
Lathyrus music is a symbiosis of jazz and classical music – polyphonic melodies and a space for improvisations push the limits of the instruments’ playability and sound. The band mainly plays their own compositions, creating a special atmosphere. Lathyrus’ pieces are in English and Latvian, giving the music a folk-like atmosphere.

“On the Brink of Light” Reviews
“On the Brink of Light” pleasantly surprised me with an exquisite aesthetic: an intricate and perfect combination of jazz, new age, contemporary classical, and traditional folk music.
Krists Saržants Review on Jazzin.lv
The quartet «Lathyrus» is like a breath of fresh air on a spring morning. Monta’s voice is among the ones which you hear for the first time and feel that you’ve heard it before and known for quite some time. Accompanied by amazing musicians, it creates a fairy-tale,
bringing us on the journey from the sunset to sundown.
Lyrics

from the album “On the Brink of Light”.
Pavasara vēsmas | The Breezes of Spring |
---|---|
Pavasara vēsmas pūš Ziedu smarža augšup ceļas Ielejas ar saules gaismu pilnas smeļas. Manās krūtīs plauks Kā pumpurīši vaļā raisās, Kā dvēsele līdzi ziedēt taisās. Vēsmas pūš Tumsa zūd Saules gaisma spoža kļūst Dvēsele prieku gūst. | The breezes of spring are blowing The scent of flowers rises up The valleys draw full of sunlight. My chest thrives As the buds arise, As the soul is going to bloom along. The breezes blow The darkness disappears The sunlight turns bright The soul rejoices. |
“Uz gaismas sliekšņa” | Sunlight |
---|---|
| Again, I stumble over the threshold of darkness And I fall as in a blind hole. How to get out? What lies ahead? To carve the symbol of the sun on the night’s black threshold, To gently carry a tiny light into the palm. With all my being I will strive for light, Till finally I stand on the brink of light. |
Rutīna | Routine |
---|---|
Dienas, stundas izzūd rutīnā. Vienmuļi paiet dienas, vientuļas aizrit stundas, nerodas jaunas domas, tās iestieg rutīnā. Pliekanas četras sienas, nedzīvas, tukšas ielas, veltīgi, lieli sapņi, tie iemieg rutīnā. Tā aizplūst dienas, stundas, tās ieslīgst rutīnā. Tā aizplūst dienas, stundas, tās izzūd rutīnā. Citāda atnāk diena, pārvēršas garās stundas, sparīgas, gaišas domas, tās mostas rutīnā. Tā pieaug cerīgas stundas, pārtop dienās un izzūd rutīnā. | Days, hours fade into a routine. The days go by uneventfully, lonely hours pass, no new thoughts arise, they get stuck in a routine. Flat four walls, lifeless, empty streets, vain, big dreams, they fall asleep into routine. So the days, the hours pass, they drown in a routine. So the days float away, the hours, they disappear into a routine. Another day comes, long hours turn into brisk, bright thoughts, they wake up in routine. So the hopeful hours grow into days and fade into a routine. |
Saule riet | The Sun is setting |
---|---|
Saule aust, Lēni riet tava dzīvība, Lēni riet saules un mana ticība tik sev. Saule aust, Lēni riet tava dzīvība. Saule aust, Saule aust, Lēni rietu es. | The sun rises, Your life is slowly sinking. My faith in myself is waning little by little. The sun is rising, Your life is slowly sinking. The sun is rising, The sun is rising, I am slowly setting. |
